Manchester United's Top Contenders to Replace Erik ten Hag as New Manager

Despite winning two trophies in his two-and-a-half years at Manchester United, the Dutchman's performances have been lackluster, with the recent defeat to Spurs adding to the growing list of underwhelming results.

And now, there are some clear favourites to replace Ten Hag in the hosteat at Manchester United.

Southgate has been linked with Old Trafford for months now, with reports suggesting back in May that United had held talks with the then-England manager as ten Hag's impending dismissal then looked an inevitability.

That didn't come to pass, of course - and you wonder whether Southgate's stock his risen after taking the Three Lions to another Euros final, or fallen after he attracted such vehement criticism for his side's performances on their way there.

Southgate has not managed at club level since leaving Middlesbrough in 2009, just a few months after overseeing their relegation from the Premier League.

A former favourite in front of goal for United, Van Nistelrooy has been touted as a potential ten Hag successor practically since the moment he arrived back at the club this summer to serve as his compatriot's assistant manager.

Van Nistelrooy has mostly held assistant and youth management jobs since taking up coaching in 2013, but did have a season and a bit in charge of PSV Eindhoven from 2022 to 2023, winning the KNVB Cup and taking the club to second in the Eredivisie.

3. Thomas Tuchel (7/2)

Regarded as one of the hot young up-and-comers in management a decade or so ago after his innovative work with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, the 51 year old is now available after leaving Bayern Munich after just one full season in charge. Bayern fell well short of Invincibles Bayer Leverkusen in a title challenge, and went out in the semi-finals of the Champions League at Real Madrid's hands.

Tuchel previously got the axe at Chelsea soon after co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali arrived at the club despite having led them to a Champions League triumph just over a year before.

4. Kieran McKenna (7/1)

A former United academy coach who then stepped up to assist Jose Mourinho and was kept on by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, McKenna departed the club to strike out on his managerial career when he joined Ipswich Town in December 2021.

McKenna and Ipswich have enjoyed a precipitous rise in tandem with one another since then, claiming back-to-back promotions to go straight from League One to the Championship. After being given a tough fixtures list, Ipswich are without a win in the top flight so far, but have won plaudits for their confident and determined performances.

5. Roberto de Zerbi (14/1)

The former Brighton boss' high-ish standing feels like a remnant of previous links dating back to his excellent first year or so in charge of the Seagulls - but it would be a surprise to see him come back to the Premier League so soon. He only joined Marseille in the summer, after all.

De Zerbi has put a rotten second half of the season at the Amex last term behind him, though, getting Marseille off to an impressive start: they were undefeated in their first five Ligue Un games before losing to Strasbourg on Sunday.
