New Delhi: India dominated Australia in the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, taking a decisive lead in the five-match series. The Indian team showcased incredible performances with both bat and ball over the four days, handing Australia only their fourth loss in a home series opener this century.
Sealing the victory with four sessions to spare on Day 4, the Indian team achieved several remarkable milestones, including Virat Kohli’s 81st century in international cricket across all formats. Following the end of first test match lets have a look at five test match records that have been made during the first test of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Team India secured their biggest-ever win in Australia and their second-largest victory against Australia by runs. Setting a target of 534, Indian bowlers dismissed Australia for 238 in their final innings.
India built a commanding lead of 533 runs, thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 161 and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century. Prior to this, India’s largest win in Australia came in Melbourne in 1977, when Bishan Singh Bedi’s team triumphed by 222 runs.
This victory also ranks as India’s second-biggest win over Australia, following their 320-run victory in the 2008 Mohali Test.
India’s victory over Australia also became their second-largest by margin of runs outside Asia and their third-largest away Test win overall. While India has enjoyed dominance on home soil, this feat in Australia added a new chapter to their record.
India’s biggest victory outside Asia came in 2019, when Virat Kohli’s team defeated the West Indies by 318 runs in North Sound. This remains their largest win by runs outside India.
The win at Optus Stadium in Perth ranks as India’s third-largest away Test victory, following their 304-run triumph over Sri Lanka in Galle in 2017 and the 318-run win against the West Indies in 2019.
In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, who captained India in the opening Test, recorded the best bowling figures by an Indian captain in the 21st century on Australian soil. He took 8/72, including a five-wicket haul.
When it comes to the best match returns by an Indian captain in Tests, Bumrah ranks fourth on the list, behind Kapil Dev’s 10/135 against the West Indies in 1983, and Bishan Singh Bedi’s 10/194 against Australia in 1977 and 9/70 against New Zealand in 1976.
Australia has played five Test matches at Optus Stadium in Perth, including the recently concluded opening match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. After winning the previous three matches, their 295-run loss to India marked their first defeat at this venue. The first Test here was against India in the 2018 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Virat Kohli scored a century, but India lost. Australia then defeated New Zealand, West Indies, and Pakistan in successive matches. With the loss to India, Australia now has a 4-1 record at Optus Stadium.
Virat Kohli scored his 30th Test century, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar as the Indian batter with the most Test centuries in Australia. Kohli’s century was his seventh in Australia, while Tendulkar had six. Kohli also set a new record for the most centuries by a visiting batter in Australia, with a total of 10. This century was also Kohli’s 100th across all formats—domestic, international, and in leagues—marking a significant milestone in his career.
